South African Hoodia Gordonii CactusHoodia is sweeping the diet supplement market, but a lot is unknown by the average consumer. By exploring what is known about the plant, you can gain a better respect for the plant and what it does for you. For example, there are a number of difficulties growing the hoodia cactus for commercial purposes. It requires desert-like temperatures, and four years or longer in order to reach maturity. The wild plant is protected by the various governments of Southern Africa, thus creating legal limitations to harvesting. Phytopharm, the first company to realize the properties of hoodia, has established plantations in South Africa, and is the only one able to sell their patented version (or those to whom they have licensed the patent). Even though companies would love to establish to a large immediate supply for consumption, it is important to protect the African hoodia from over-harvesting so that it can be enjoyed by future generations. In essence, the amount of worldwide hoodia is limited by both worries about over-harvesting and legal restraints. The hoodia cactus is more properly known as the South African hoodi acactus, or (in Latin) hoodia gordonii. Although it's a succulent, and therefore calling it a cactus is inaccurate, that name has stuck as it resembles a cactus in its native Kalahari Desert. No matter what you call it, the African hoodia cactus is a beautiful plant. Flowers, appearing after the plant reaches maturity, are pale purple. It is also called xshoba or xhooba by the San Bushmen who have used it to treat indigestion, minor skin infections, and as a hunger and thirst suppressant during long hunts. There are more than twenty different varieties of hoodia, but only hoodia gordonii is known to have the natural appetite suppressant. Some companies may be selling products that are based off the African hoodia Cactus, but customers are advised to check which specific cactus was used. As with all health supplements, it is best to buy hoodia products from a company with a proven record. Also, dieters are advised to drink plenty of water, as hoodia suppresses thirst as well appetite. Like any drug, you should limit the amount of time you are exposed to hoodia. Although it's safe in the short term, its long-term effects are still unknown. More to the point, if you need hoodia for long-term purposes, then you should see a doctor. That said, hoodia represents a powerful tool for the dieter! |
